Playing the game got me thinking about trying to do some more stuff with the Black Mesa content pack. Atlas even instructs the player to "find a crowbar or something" shortly after you arrive.Īlso I've been suspecting that the designs of headcrab zombies in Half-Life were an inspiration for the flood in the Halo series. Bioshock borrows a lot of similar mechanics to Half-Life (itself introducing mechanics that were immitated by Dishonored and Prey), right down to the player's first defense being an improvised weapon (a wrench in the original game). In the first three Halo games, the player is often joined by marines who provide support similar to the security guards and scientists you encounter in Black Mesa (and later your resistance friends in Half-Life 2). The inner nerd in me is interested in all the influences Half-Life had on other games. The outdated graphics probably looked amazing when the game first came out in 1998, and its mechanics were a lot more refined by Half-Life 2, as well as later games which drew on Half-Life, such as Halo and Bioshock. It's kinda weird playing it for the first time 20 years later. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that, in order to promote Half-Life: Alyx, Valve has made the Half-Life series free to download and play for the next two months! Getting a chance to play the original Half-Life seemed pretty exciting. That awkward moment when you finally get a job, but on your first day at work a resonance cascade happens and suddenly there are extra-dimensional aliens everywhere.
